ETHEL JEANETTE MITCHELL

Ethel

 Written by Terry Conner

Ethel died tragically in an automobile accident at the tender age of fifteen. She received a diary at Christmas in 1934.  These are some excerpts of that diary which was written throughout the last year of her life.

Jan. 03:  I had fun today. Mr. Vadman my teacher made me sit down for laughing at Irene Olson.  I and Joyce are still mad.

Jan. 05:  I cleaned up the house.  Went over to Janus.  We went downtown.

Jan. 07:  Went to school with Jane.  She went off and left me.  I didn’t like it.

Jan. 16:  I went to English class with a mouthful of water and Miss Galbrath said something to me and out went the water!

Jan. 24:  Today is Wesley birthday.  He is 19 yr old and a senior in high school.

Jan. 30:  Had our semester test, got B in Social Studies.  Norman is sitting in the seat across from me.

Feb. 01:  Norman is sitting across from me correcting papers, Irene in back.  First basketball junior night boys.

Mar. 11:  Made a resolution to write in my diary every night for Home Ec.

Mar. 15:  Cesare went and asked Stucker something for me and the answer was I would rather go with Jay H.

May  28:  My aunt and uncle came out.  Ada and Nanke.  We had fun.  Practiced for the opera today.

May  29:  We had the opera.  I got the giggles in a song.

June 06:  Graduation at 8:00.  Mrs. Moore gave me a manicure set.

June 07:  It is the last day of school and very hot.

June 14:  It rained all day.  Pat and Wes graduated from high school.  Mother went to their graduation.

June 30:  Started packing cherrys first time in my life over at warehouse.

July 10:  I got a bathing suit for a dollar.

July 11:  Pat got mother a silk dress the 12 of July.  Also white shoes.

July 12:  Today is the first time this year that Louise and Max went in swimming with Bob S.

She sounds like a pretty typical teenager doesn’t she?  Louise noted that out of all the children, Ethel was the only one who referred to Tina as “mother” instead of “mom”.
